Calls on Prime Minister to Address Norwich Sports Facilities

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Sat 14th Jul 2007

Prime Minister Gordon Brown is being asked to address issues relating to the provision of sports facilities in Norwich. Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, Simon Wright, has written to the Prime Minister in response to his recent statement that supported more investment for community and local authority sports provision.

"A number of sports facilities in Norwich are threatened with closure," says Simon Wright. "This is at odds with the Prime Minister's statement this week which promises more investment in sports."

"The playing fields at Blackdale Middle School could be lost forever if the Education Secretary doesn't reject Norfolk County Council's wish to sell them. We have also seen this week the closure of Lakenham Sports and Leisure Centre."

"The City Council also has yet to provide Norwich with a national standard skate park."

"I have asked Gordon Brown to respond to these issues to establish whether his recent statement will be of benefit to us here in Norwich in the near future."
