MPs are being called upon to get behind a campaign to urge FIFA to reconsider the use of technology in football.
Simon Wright MP (Norwich South, Liberal Democrat) has has tabled a parliamentary motion, published today (EDM 327), calling for goal-line technology to be used in the sport.
Mr Wright said: "So many other sports have taken the bold step of introducing technology to assist match officials. Tennis, cricket, rugby, and basketball all have benefited from new technologies. Football is being left behind by FIFA's old fashioned view of sport.
"The argument that goal-line technology would interrupt the flow of the game is completely bogus. It would be perfectly possible to implement the technology in such a way as to allow the fluid nature of football to continue.
"This isn't about sour grapes. Frankly, England deserved to lose on the basis of our dismal performance on Sunday. This is about promoting measures to bring greater fairness and justice to the world's biggest sport.
"I really do think that the time has come to put huge pressure on FIFA to look at this issue again, and I'm hoping that many other MPs will agree with me."
Simon Wright's EDM has been published in today's order papers.
EDM 327 reads:
GOAL LINE TECHNOLOGY
"That this House notes that the use of technology has improved confidence in the results of many high profile sporting events; considers that goal-line technology would not necessarily detriment the fluidity of football matches but would considerably enhance fairness in the game; and calls on FIFA to reconsider the use of goal-line technology."
