Simon Wright, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, is welcoming the decision announced this afternoon to scrap SATS tests for 14 year olds. He is now calling for the savings to be used in educational improvements.
Mr Wright, a former secondary school teacher of mathematics, said:
"Teachers have been saying for years that these tests are unreliable and a complete waste of time."
"The shambles of this year's marking of SATs papers is still causing problems six months later, and this has proved to be the final nail in the coffin for these tests."
"The money that will now be saved as a result of scrapping these tests could be used to deliver real improvements in education. We're in desperate need in Norfolk for money to boost reading and writing skills. I very much hope that these savings will be used to help our children get the best chance to succeed in education."
