A survey by trade union GMB reveals that £1.8 million of council tax has gone uncollected in Norwich in 2007/08. Responding to the news, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South Simon Wright said:
"Council Tax is an unfair tax because it hits those on low and fixed incomes the hardest. It adds insult to injury that nearly £2million has gone uncollected in Norwich, because the result is that we all end up paying more to compensate. With the current system of council tax, it is very difficult for councils to collect all the tax owed. The Government needs to find a fairer and more practical local tax to fund our services based on ability to pay."
