A meeting took place today (Wednesday) of Leaders and Chief Executives of Norfolk's Councils, together with representatives of the Boundary Committee for England, to discuss the anticipated review of local government structures in Norfolk.
Following the meeting, there were renewed calls for an independently chaired, cross-Party Norfolk Convention to involve civic organisations and other interested bodies to look at proposals for local government in the county, and to report to the Boundary Committee.
Simon Wright, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, said:
"The people of Norfolk must debate Norfolk's future. For too long, it has been a debate that has taken place amongst the politicians, but not the public."
"There has been a growing risk of Norfolk's councils abusing public money to fight propaganda battles. Change now looks inevitable, and the politicians must now act in a responsible way to encourage public debate and get the best possible result for the whole county by working together."
"A Norfolk Convention would do just that. It would bring all interested bodies together and look at how local government can be provided in the most efficient and cost effective way possible, while also taking into account the needs and wishes of our communities. All political parties and council groups should now get behind this proposal to make sure that Norfolk gets the best possible local governance."
