The decision of Sir Menzies Campbell to resign as leader of the Liberal Democrats has provoked a shocked reaction from leading local Liberal Democrats. Simon Wright is the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, a target seat for the Party. Mr Wright, who organised Sir Ming Campbell's successful leadership campaign in the East of England last year, said:
"I am stunned by this decision. It has come completely out of the blue."
"Sir Ming Campbell has commanded enormous respect across the political divide for his experience and judgement. He was the only Party leader who has been consistently right on issues such as the war in Iraq."
"He had, in my view, the energy, the ideas, and the determination to see the Liberal Democrats increase their representation in Parliament and to deliver on an agenda distinctive from the other two main political parties. He spoke only this weekend at a meeting of members in Mildenhall, sharing his commitment to see the Party make gains in target seats like Norwich South and Broadland."
"He has at times been treated cruelly by some elements of the national media, who often seem to value image over substance. I have no doubt that Sir Ming has come to this decision because he feels that it is in the best interests of the Liberal Democrats, but it is a very sad result."
