Brown Rules Out 2007 Election

October 6, 2007 7:25 PM

Commenting on the announcement from Gordon Brown today that there will not be an early election, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesman for Norwich South, Simon Wright, says:

"Our own polling figures in Norwich South have told us that the Liberal Democrats are within touching distance of seizing the seat from Labour at the next general election. No doubt Gordon Brown's own figures have been telling a similar story in other marginal seats across the country."

"We are ready to contest Norwich South and to win whenever the Prime Minister does choose to go to the electorate. However, these last few weeks have not been good for the democratic process. Our Ministers should not be distracted from the business of Government by election speculation. Brown should now introduce legislation for fixed term parliaments to stop this farcical situation arising again."

The Liberal Democrats came second in Norwich South at the last General Election, and the constituency is one of the Party's top target seats.

If you are a resident of the Norwich South constituency and are writing to discuss any issue that Parliament or government is responsible for, you must provide your home address as MPs are generally only permitted to act on behalf of constituents.

If you are not a constituent, you do not need to provide your address, but the matters we can deal with are more limited and you may wish to contact your local MP in the first instance.
