Over 3000 Norfolk residents signed the Liberal Democrat "Hands off our Hospitals" petition on a day of campaigning on Saturday.
Liberal Democrat Member of Parliament for North Norfolk, Norman Lamb, and Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidates for Broadland and Norwich South, April Pond and Simon Wright respectively collected signatures with Lib Dem campaigners in Norwich, Aylsham, Fakenham, Holt, Cromer, North Walsham, Sheringham, and Wells.
Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb said:
"Only in January, the Health Secretary said that hospitals should not close over short-term financial crises. Yet it looks increasingly likely that it will happen. We are calling for Patricia Hewitt's intervention.
"The Government must realize that this is a priority issues, and take action before it is too late."
Liberal Democrat Norwich South candidate Simon Wright said:
"Everyone I spoke to in Norwich is really angry about the potential threat to our community hospitals. They back our calls to keep local hospitals open, regardless of the financial crisis within the Norfolk Primary Care Trust. There is also considerable concern about the knock on effect of closures on the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital, which is operating close to capacity most of the year."
Petition forms are available by writing to Norman Lamb's office at 15 Market Place, North Walsham, NR28 9BP.
