26 dental practices in Norfolk are leaving the NHS this month for adult patients. New NHS contracts for dentists came into force on April 1st, which have been unpopular with many dental practices. PE Roos on Norwich Road, Fakenham, will continue to see children and NHS patients exempt from charges, but other NHS patients are being asked to switch to Denplan.
The fear around the new contracts is that patients will be seen less often, due to increased charges, and attempts to undertake preventative work by dentists will be undermined.
It's been quoted that 65% of patients will pay more for dental treatment, with the majority of that going not to dentists - but to the Government.
In 1999, Tony Blair promised that everyone would have an NHS dentist by 2001. Yet these new dental contracts introduced by his Government look likely to increase the number of people locally without an NHS dentist.
